How was Taking Flight Born?
Beth met Elise whilst working on a youth theatre project in South Wales. Having worked extensively together since then on a freelance basis, they decided to make it official and set up Taking Flight.
Our aim with this company is to work with groups of people who have traditionally been under-represented in theatre, film and television.
Taking Flight is a non building – based company. We have a base in Cardiff, but to run our workshops and residencies we travel to agreed hired venues that are fully accessible and suitable for the requirements of a particular group.
All our courses aim to:
– Increase confidence.
– Improve movement and wheelchair skills (where appropriate).
– Improve vocal technique including projection, diction and tone.
– Assist with spatial awareness.
– Create a group identity and enhance team work.
Most of our courses include a performance element however this is not always a necessity as we believe the process is as important as the end product.
To find out more about our workshops and talk about booking, please go to our Workshops page, or email us directly.
Beth has always known she wanted a career in the theatre and she graduated from Birmingham University with a degree in Drama and Theatre Arts back in 1998. Since then she has worked as an actress for companies such as Give it A Name, Theatr Iolo and The Fetch Mask and Puppet Theatre, and also a facilitator for various companies including Theatr Na Nog and The Shakespeare Schools Festival. She has lived and worked in France, Spain and Dublin, but came to Cardiff in 2003 and is now settled with her partner and 4 young children. After working with The BackUp Trust in 2007, along with Elise, Beth decided to set up Taking Flight to work with disabled and non disabled actors to create accessible theatre performances. It has been a sharp learning curve, getting to grips with all of the administration that comes with setting up a charity, but Beth now hopes to take the company on towards core funding and a full time paid staff!.
